OVERBITE — Free Oversampled Clipper Plugin for Mastering (VST3, Windows)
OVERBITE is a free clipper plugin for Windows 10/11 (64-bit), available as a VST3 and a standalone app. It clips with a variable knee at up to 16x oversampling, draws the ceiling and knee directly on the transfer curve and scope, has a DELTA mode that plays only what the clipper removed, and a TP-SAFE mode that trims true peaks automatically. It is part of BSMT.DSP, the free suite by Dr.dawgOG from Anand, Gujarat. No signup.
What OVERBITE does
A clipper chops the tops off peaks instead of turning the whole signal down the way a limiter does. Done well, that trades a tiny amount of distortion for a big gain in loudness and punch, which is why clippers sit in front of the limiter on most modern hip-hop and trap masters. OVERBITE's knee is variable, from a hard edge that adds bright harmonics to a soft curve that rounds transients gently, and both the ceiling and the knee are drawn right on the transfer curve and the live scope so you can see the waveform being shaped.
Clipping creates aliasing if it is done at the session sample rate, and aliasing sounds cheap. OVERBITE oversamples at up to 16x so the harmonics land where they belong. DELTA mode is the honesty switch: it plays only the audio the clipper is destroying, so you know exactly what you traded for loudness. TP-SAFE watches the true-peak level and auto-trims when inter-sample peaks try to sneak over the ceiling.
Clipping 808s, drums and masters
On an 808, a soft-knee clip of two or three dB flattens the fundamental just enough to add loudness and a little harmonic edge that helps it read on phones. On a drum bus, a harder knee sharpens transients and lets the snare crack without pushing the limiter. On the master, put OVERBITE just before CEILING: let the clipper take the fastest peaks, then let the limiter handle the rest, and the whole chain works less hard.
Use DELTA while you set the amount. If what you hear in delta mode is mostly drum transients, you are fine; if you hear vocal words, back off. OVERBITE runs as a VST3 in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase and Bitwig on Windows, and the standalone app is there for offline testing.
How to use OVERBITE
- Insert OVERBITE before the limiter on the master, or directly on the 808 or drum bus.
- Set the ceiling, then choose the knee: hard for bright, aggressive transients, soft for a rounder, tape-like edge.
- Push the input while switching DELTA on and off to hear exactly what is being clipped.
- Enable TP-SAFE for release masters and pick an oversampling factor of 8x or 16x for the final bounce.

OVERBITE FAQ
What is the difference between a clipper and a limiter?
A limiter turns the signal down when a peak crosses the ceiling, so the whole moment gets quieter. A clipper simply cuts the top off the peak and leaves everything else untouched. Clippers keep punch and loudness at the cost of a little distortion; limiters stay cleaner but can pump. Most loud masters use both, clipper first, and OVERBITE plus CEILING give you that pair for free.
Why does oversampling matter in a clipper?
Clipping generates harmonics above the audible band. Without oversampling those harmonics fold back down as aliasing, which sounds harsh and gritty in a bad way. OVERBITE oversamples at up to 16x so the distortion stays musical.
Should I clip my 808?
Usually yes, gently. Two or three dB of soft-knee clipping on an 808 adds loudness and a little harmonic edge that helps it translate to phone speakers. Use DELTA mode to make sure you are only shaving the peaks.
Is OVERBITE really free?
Yes. It is fully free with no signup, no trial and no watermark, distributed inside the BSMT.DSP installer on GitHub Releases.
Does OVERBITE work in FL Studio, Ableton Live and Reaper?
Yes. It is a 64-bit VST3 for Windows 10/11 and works in every VST3 host on Windows, including FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase and Bitwig.
