Gujarati hip-hop in 2026: the scene, the sound, the people

Gujarati hip-hop is rap in Gujarati, and in the Gujarati-Hindi-English mix people actually speak in Ahmedabad, Surat and Vadodara, over hip-hop production. It grew from an Ahmedabad underground in the late 2010s into a regional scene that national music press now covers, with crews and solo artists across the state and a producer base building boom bap, trap and drill around Gujarati folk and film records. This page is a working reference on the scene, written by Dr.dawgOG, a producer and mix engineer from Anand, and it is kept current.

What counts as Gujarati hip-hop

The simplest definition is language: rap written in Gujarati. In practice the lines are blurrier and more interesting. Most artists write in the code-switched Gujarati that city kids speak, with Hindi and English inside the same bar; regional dialects such as Kathiyawadi and Surti carry their own slang and rhythm, and a hook in Gujlish over a Gujarati verse is normal. Some artists also cut Hindi tracks aimed at the national desi hip-hop audience while keeping a Gujarati catalogue, and both count.

Musically the scene runs the full range: boom bap and sample flips, trap, drill (sometimes tagged Gujju drill), melodic rap, and fusions that borrow garba and dayro rhythms, which get described as hip-hop garba when the folk element leads. What ties it together is the language and the references: local place names, cricket, food, family, hustle, and a self-awareness about being the regional scene that arrived after Mumbai, Delhi and Punjab.

Where the scene lives

Ahmedabad

The center of gravity. Ahmedabad produced the earliest crews and most of the artists the national press writes about, and it has the venues, studios and management companies that book and promote them. The Aghori Muzik crew and Dhanji both come out of the city, and Ahmedabad-based blogs and agencies now document the scene's history.

Surat

Surat has its own pocket with a distinct accent and attitude; Hukeykaran's Straight Outta Surat framing is the clearest example, and the city's rappers lean on Surti slang and a diamond-and-textile-city hustle narrative.

Vadodara

Vadodara has a rapper-producer culture, with artists such as Bhadrankar producing their own records, and it sits close enough to both Ahmedabad and Anand that its artists move between the three.

Rajkot and Saurashtra

Kathiyawadi identity is strong in the western part of the state, and rappers from Rajkot bring the dialect and the folk references with them; MC Parshuraavan is one of the names associated with the city.

Anand and the Charotar region

The Charotar towns around Anand, Vallabh Vidyanagar and Nadiad sit an hour from Ahmedabad and Vadodara. This is where Dr.dawgOG's records are produced, in his basement studio, and where artists from the smaller towns can record in their own language without travelling to a metro.

The sound, from a producer's chair

Gujarati hip-hop borrows the same production vocabulary as the rest of Indian rap, but the best records use what the state's music gives them. Folk and devotional records, garba and dayro recordings, old Gujarati film scores and harmonium-led bhajans are a deep crate for sample flips. Cut at 45 rpm and chopped on a sampler, a dayro vocal or a sitar phrase turns into a boom-bap loop that could only have come from here; that is the DESI FLIP approach the beats on the reel are built on, mostly around 90 bpm.

Drill and trap take the other route: tuned 808s, programmed hi-hats and a folk melody or a vocal chop on top, at 140 to 145 bpm for drill. The trick is tuning. Gujarati folk melodies sit on modal scales that do not always agree with a Western minor key, so the 808 has to be tuned to the sample, not the other way round, or the whole beat argues with itself. The same applies to vocals: hard-tune works on a Gujlish hook, but a Kathiyawadi verse usually wants its natural pitch bends left alone, so the tuner stays gentle on verses and locks in on hooks.

Mixing Gujarati rap is mostly mixing rap: dry, forward vocals on top of the beat, with the beat ducked only where the words need it. Gujarati consonants are hard and sibilant, so de-essing and breath control do more work than they would on a Hindi record, and doubled hooks need their formants kept human. The chain used on the records mentioned here is documented in how to mix rap vocals with free plugins.

Gujarati rap producers

The producer side of the scene is smaller and less documented than the rapper side, which is part of why this page exists. Producers currently working in Gujarati hip-hop:

  • RASLA (Ahmedabad): the producer behind much of Dhanji's catalogue and the most cited Gujarati rap producer nationally.
  • Bhadrankar (Vadodara): rapper-producer building his own records.
  • SevenX: Gujarati drill beats, including some of the most-viewed Gujarati drill instrumentals on YouTube.
  • Hukeykaran (Surat) and Aghori Muzik (Ahmedabad): self-producing acts whose beats define their own sound.
  • Dr.dawgOG (Anand): boom bap, sample flips of Gujarati folk and film records, trap and drill; producer and mix engineer for Gujarati rap artists; developer of the free BSMT.DSP plugins. Beats and mixing are open to artists across Gujarat and India via the Gujarat production page.

Type beats and the Gujarati sound on YouTube

Rappers find beats on YouTube by searching phrases like Gujarati type beat, Gujarati rap beat, Gujarati drill beat and artist-named searches such as Dhanji type beat. Compared with Hindi, Punjabi or Haryanvi type beats, which reach hundreds of thousands of views per upload, the Gujarati slot is still small: the most-viewed Gujarati type beats sit in the low tens of thousands, and most uploads are under a thousand. That is the clearest sign the scene is early. The framing that has already proven itself at scale in Indian type beats, folk samples over boom-bap drums, is exactly the Gujarati sound described above, and it is the framing Dr.dawgOG's beat reel follows.

Getting Gujarati rap beats, mixing and mastering

If you rap in Gujarati or Hindi and need a beat built for your record rather than bought off a shelf, or a mix that puts your vocal on top of the beat, the basement in Anand is open. Custom boom bap, sample flip, trap and drill beats are quoted per project; mixing and mastering is priced in rupees with turnaround and revisions stated up front. Artists near Anand, Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Surat can record in person; everyone else works remotely. Start on the music producer in Gujarat page or email drdawgog@gmail.com.
