KNUCKLE — Free Compressor Plugin, VCA / FET / OPTO (VST3, Windows)
KNUCKLE is a free compressor plugin for Windows 10/11 (64-bit), delivered as a VST3 and a standalone app. It offers three circuit personalities, a clean VCA, a biting FET with drive and grit, and a slow-blooming OPTO, plus a gain-reduction history strip and a one-knob SMASH mode. It is part of BSMT.DSP, the free 27-plugin suite by Dr.dawgOG, a hip-hop producer and mix engineer from Anand, Gujarat. No account needed.
What KNUCKLE does
A compressor turns loud moments down so the whole performance can be turned up. What separates compressors is how they do it, and KNUCKLE gives you three answers in one free plugin. VCA mode is clean and fast, the choice for a bus or a vocal that just needs control. FET mode is fast and aggressive, with drive and grit that add the bite rap vocals and snares are known for. OPTO mode reacts slowly and musically, blooming into the sound, which flatters sung hooks and bass.
The GR history strip is the part you will miss in other free compressors. It draws the exact chunk of signal being removed, in red, over your input waveform as it scrolls past. You can see whether the compressor is grabbing only the peaks or chewing the whole phrase, which is the difference between glue and squash. When you stop caring about theory, the SMASH knob does the entire job with one movement.
Rap vocals, drums and the glue bus
On a rap vocal, run FET mode with a fast attack and medium release for the first stage, then a gentler VCA pass for level. The history strip tells you if the plosives are triggering the compressor before the words do. On a chopped break, FET with drive brings the snare forward and adds grit; on a live-sounding drum loop, OPTO keeps the groove breathing.
As a glue compressor on the beat bus or the whole mix, VCA mode with a slow attack, auto-style release and one or two dB of reduction makes the elements sit together. Use the strip to make sure the 808 is not driving all the reduction; if it is, reach for VICEGRIP's multiband approach instead. KNUCKLE runs as a VST3 in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase and Bitwig on Windows.
How to use KNUCKLE
- Pick the circuit: VCA for clean control, FET for bite and grit, OPTO for slow musical bloom.
- Lower the threshold while watching the red gain-reduction strip until it only grabs the peaks you want tamed.
- Set attack and release by ear against the beat, or skip all of it and turn the SMASH knob.
- Match the output so the compressed and bypassed signals are the same loudness before you judge the result.

KNUCKLE FAQ
Is there a free glue compressor plugin?
Yes. KNUCKLE in VCA mode with a slow attack and light reduction works as a glue compressor on a drum bus or full mix, and it is free with no signup. Watch the gain-reduction strip to keep the reduction to one or two dB.
What is the difference between VCA, FET and OPTO compression?
They are three circuit designs from hardware history. VCA is clean and precise, FET is fast and aggressive with a distinctive bite, and OPTO reacts slowly and smoothly. KNUCKLE models all three so you can pick the flavor per source instead of owning three plugins.
Which KNUCKLE mode is best for rap vocals?
FET mode for the first, harder stage, because its fast attack and grit push the words forward. Follow it with a gentle VCA pass, or ELEVATOR, the free vocal rider in the same suite, for level control without pumping.
Is KNUCKLE really free?
Completely. No trial, no account, no email wall. It ships inside the BSMT.DSP installer from GitHub Releases, where you can tick just KNUCKLE or all 27 plugins.
Does KNUCKLE work in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper and Studio One?
Yes. KNUCKLE is a 64-bit VST3 for Windows 10/11 and loads in every VST3 host on Windows, including FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase and Bitwig.
Install, SmartScreen and Mac questions are answered on the BSMT.DSP suite FAQ.
