What INTERCOM does
A vocoder splits the voice into frequency bands, measures how loud each band is moment to moment, and imposes that pattern onto a synthesizer carrier. The result is a synth that talks. INTERCOM uses 16 bands, enough for intelligible words, and generates its own carriers, so you do not need to route a synth into it. Because the carriers snap to the KEY and SCALE you choose, the robot voice is always in tune with the beat.
The harmonizer half is what makes it useful on rap and R&B records. Chord modes stack octaves, fifths, and minor or major harmonies on top of the tracked voice, all from one take. Sing one line and get a gospel-style stack; talk one line and get a radio robot. The two modes are two clicks apart, and both stay locked to the song's scale.
Robot hooks, harmony stacks and intros
For a classic vocoder hook, set KEY and SCALE, pick a bright carrier and blend the robot under a dry LOCKJAW-tuned lead so the words stay clear. For a harmony stack, use a chord mode with the major or minor third and the fifth, and pan the result wide with WINGSPAN or leave it centered as a pad behind the hook. On intros and outros, a monotone robot through INTERCOM followed by BASEMENT reverb is a whole mood in two plugins.
It works on non-vocal sources too: run a drum loop into the vocoder and the carrier chord rhythmically follows the beat, a cheap way to make a chord stab pattern from a break. INTERCOM runs as a VST3 in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase and Bitwig on Windows.

- Insert INTERCOM on the vocal track and set KEY and SCALE to match the beat.
- Choose vocoder mode for the talking-synth robot or a chord mode for harmonies.
- Pick a carrier and adjust the blend between the dry voice and the vocoded or harmonized signal.
