ATTIC — Free Lo-Fi Effect Plugin: Tape, Vinyl, Cassette, VHS (VST3, Windows)
ATTIC is a free lo-fi effect plugin for Windows 10/11 (64-bit), available as a VST3 and a standalone app. One AGE macro runs tape wear, vinyl crackle, hiss and bit-crush together, and the noise only breathes while your audio actually plays. BANDBOX voicings snap the whole sound into PHONE, RADIO or VHS in one click. It is the slowed-and-reverb aesthetic on tap, part of BSMT.DSP, the free suite by Dr.dawgOG, a boom-bap producer from Anand, Gujarat.
What ATTIC does
Lo-fi is not one effect but a pile of them: the pitch wobble and dulling of worn tape, the crackle of a dusty record, the hiss of a cassette, the crunch of an old sampler's bit depth. Dialing each of those in separately takes four plugins and twenty knobs. ATTIC puts them under one AGE macro that pushes all of them together in a musically balanced way, so turning one knob takes a clean sample from new to thirty years in a box.
Two details keep it usable in a mix. The noise floor is gated to the audio, so crackle and hiss only breathe while something is playing and never sit under silence between sections. And BANDBOX voicings apply a whole-sound frequency shape in one click: PHONE for the tinny telephone intro, RADIO for the mid-forward AM broadcast, VHS for the dull, wobbly home-video sound.
Lo-fi beats, sample aging and vocal intros
On a lo-fi or boom-bap beat, ATTIC on the sample loop with a moderate AGE setting makes a clean stock sample sound like it was dug out of a crate; on the whole beat bus, a lighter touch glues drums and sample into the same era. For the slowed-and-reverb aesthetic, pair ATTIC with BASEMENT and a slow-tempo project.
On vocals, PHONE on the first line of a verse and then bypassing it is the classic intro trick, and RADIO under a hook double adds a distant layer behind the clean lead. Because the noise is gated to the audio, you can leave ATTIC printed on a track without hiss filling the gaps. It runs as a VST3 in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase and Bitwig on Windows.
How to use ATTIC
- Insert ATTIC on the sample, the beat bus or a vocal.
- Turn AGE up until the source sounds the right number of years old; the crackle and hiss follow the audio automatically.
- Pick a BANDBOX voicing, PHONE, RADIO or VHS, when you want the whole frequency shape to change at once.
- Automate the bypass or the AGE knob for intros and transitions, and add BASEMENT for the slowed-and-reverb sound.

ATTIC FAQ
How do I make a sample sound old and dusty?
Put ATTIC on it and turn up AGE. The macro adds tape wobble and dulling, vinyl crackle, hiss and a little bit-crush in a balanced way, and the crackle only plays while the sample plays. Add BASEMENT reverb with DUST for the full crate-dug sound.
Is ATTIC a lo-fi instrument or an effect?
An effect. It processes any audio you send through it, samples, drums, vocals or a whole beat. It does not generate sounds; for that use your sampler and then age it with ATTIC.
What is the difference between the PHONE, RADIO and VHS voicings?
PHONE narrows the sound to a tinny telephone band, RADIO pushes a mid-forward AM broadcast tone, and VHS dulls and wobbles it like an old home video tape. Each is a one-click whole-sound shape on top of the AGE processing.
Is ATTIC really free?
Yes. Completely free, no account, no email gate, no trial. It ships inside the BSMT.DSP installer on GitHub Releases and can be installed alone.
Does ATTIC work in FL Studio and Ableton Live?
It does. ATTIC is a 64-bit VST3 for Windows 10/11 and works in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper, Studio One, Cubase, Bitwig and any other VST3 host, with a standalone app included.
